On 14 September 2017, the Institute of Oceanography (at Nha Trang) celebrated the 95th anniversary of its establishment (14 September 1922 – 14 September 2017).

The Institute's predecessor was "Service des Pêche de l'Indochine" founded on September 14th, 1922. Since the establishment, the Institute of Oceanography has implemented many worth studies that have contributed significantly to the exploitation and conservation of the Bien Dong (East Sea). The main tasks of the Institute are: Fundamental study and research on oceanographic and ecological processes and rules; Fundamental investigation on natural conditions, marine biodiversity, biological-ecological-biochemical characteristics of aquatic organisms, living and non-living resources, and marine environment of Vietnam; Applying basic scientific results and achievements to management practices, rational uses of marine resources, sustainable aquaculture, biodiversity conservation, national sovereignty and environment protection, prediction of oceanographic processes, coastal and marine engineering designing; Building up a collection of living and non-living marine specimens; Applying new technologies; Training and education on oceanography; International cooperation in oceanography;
Beside great contribution to the development of the oceanography of the country, it also has many researches that made significant contribution to the planning, marine environmental protection, development of the local marine economy of coastal provinces.

On this occasion, the Institute of Oceanography was honoured to receive the Certificates of Merit of Prime Minister and Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee. Some groups and scientists of the institute were also awarded Certificates of Merit of the President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. The Spratly Park on the beach behind the institute was also inaugurated on the occasion of this event.
