INTRODUCTION

Bien Dong is one of the most biologically diverse marine regions in the world, holding around one third of the entire world's marine species. This area is high abundant in marine resources and extremely significant in geopolitical sense. However, Bien Dong is being challenged in enormous, transboundary environmental and resource issues. Thus, it has been increasingly attracting research interests not only from the countries surrounding the Bien Dong, which depend largely on its natural resources, but also from countries from the other parts of the world.

During 100 years of development, in cooperation with Vietnamese and foreign partners and through numerous investigations in Bien Dong, the Institute of Oceanography has gained significant knowledge and understanding of the regional oceanographic processes, marine biology, environmental conditions and resources in the region, making remarkable contributions to sustainable marine economic development and conservation of biodiversity and environment in Bien Dong.

The Scientific Conference “Bien Dong” was first organized in 2000, followed by the second in 2002, and then repeats every five years. They provided the opportunity to review scientific activities and results from Vietnamese waters and adjacent areas, and became a place for marine managers and scientists to meet and discuss emerging challenges in ocean science, and to promote scientific collaboration in the region. Together with the international integration in ocean science and technology, the Scientific Conference “Bien Dong” was extended to a broader international audience (both scientific and non-scientific) since 2007. To commemorate its 100th anniversary (14/9/1922 – 14/9/2022), the Institute of Oceanography is organizing the 6th International Scientific Conference “Bien Dong 2022” to review the research results and achievement on Bien Dong throughout the century, to advance marine scientific knowledge, and promote further international cooperation for the future of the ocean.

The two-day Conference will be composed of one and a half days of the Conference and one-half day of Research Directors’ Forum.
