On 22 November 2017, the Seminar on starting the Project: “Process studies on air - sea - mainland interactions and environmental variations of Bien Dong in the context of climate change within the framework of IOC/WESTPAC” titled “Scientific approach: Matters related to processes of air - sea - mainland interactions and ocean acidification” was held at the Institute of Oceanography, Nha Trang, Vietnam.

This is a national level project funded by the Government of Vietnam and will be implemented in 4 years (October 2017 – March 2021). The project is presided by the Institute of Oceanography with participation of other institutions and units: Vietnam Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change, Institute of Marine Environment and Resources, Research Institute for Marine Fisheries, Research Institute of Seas and Islands, South Central Hydro – Meteorological Station.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vo Si Tuan, Director of the Institute of Oceanography, Chairperson of WESTPAC is the project leader.

Long-term objectives are:

  • To understand some processes of air - sea - mainland interactions and environmental variations of Bien Dong (South China Sea) in the context of climate change; and
  • To strengthen capacity and position through co-coordinating activities with IOC and WESTPAC.

Main study activities are :

  • Air - sea - mainland interactions in Bien Dong;
  • Scale and change of upwelling in the relation with fisheries and environment in Bien Dong;
  • Ocean acidification and its impacts on biodiversity in Bien Dong;
  • Exploitation and establishment database related to research activities; and
  • International cooperation and capacity building in oceanography.
