The Regional Workshop on the Contribution of Oceanographic Data and Information Management and Exchange to Ocean and Coastal Sustainability and SDG-14 was held in Tianjin, China, 16-18 May 2017.
Goals of the Workshop are to:
i) review the status of ocean data and information management technologies, techniques, procedures and/or practices;
ii) demonstrate the advantages, cost/benefit and products that can be derived from national, regional and global practices in D&I management oceanographic data management facilities and how IOC/IODE can assist countries in the WESTPAC region in establishing such centres;
iii) identify collaborative opportunities for D&I management in the Western Pacific.
The workshop was co-organized by UNESCO/IOC International Ocean Data and Informaiton Exchange, and National Marine Data and Information Service (NMDIS). More than 30 participants from national oceanographic data centers, marine research and/or academic institutions of Australia, Bangladesh, Cayman Islands, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United States of America and Vietnam, as well as representatives of international organizations and projects such as IOC/UNESCO, IOC Project Office for IODE, IOC Sub-commission for Western Pacific (WESTPAC), Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), IODE/Oceandocs, and Pacific Community participated in the event.
The workshop mainly focus on the marine data and information management and service, capacity building on the data and information management, and the importance of international cooperation. During the workshop, the participants also had discussion on how to promote the implementation of GOAL 14 “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development” in 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through national and regional ocean related cooperation.
